The Dangers of Partisanship

This week in America the nation is focused on the outcome of the election for the next president of the United States.  After enduring  a grueling campaign that has lasted well over a year, the citizens who cast their vote will decide which man will shoulder the problems of the nation for the next four years.  A question that hangs in the balance is whether or not the country can get beyond the oppressive polarization of "D" and "R".  At a time when a critical inflection point looms, the government must come together for the common good to solve the deficit crisis and remedy the so-called "fiscal cliff" drama. Still another crisis in the United States has been the deterioration of responsible government.  Representatives who are charged with serving the country for the good of the public have devolved in to partisanship wherein their first loyalty is to the party instead of to the citizens.  This contravention of representative democracy portends costly consequences for all who proudly call the United States their home. There was another time in U.S. history when divisions threatened to carve the country in to polarized camps.  During the Civil War, the state of the union was at peril but it was the leadership of President Lincoln that altered the course of history.  His leadership preserved the fragile unity of 36 states and ensured that a sense of nationalism provided a sense of solidarity and shared identity. Whoever sits in the Oval Office in 2013, this man needs to remember that being an American in these United States is far more than "D" or "R".  The millions of people who are out of work define themselves as Americans who are out of work.  The nation needs to go forward with a sense of nationalism that does not decry the role of government but instead heralds government as a good for the people.  Trim the budget, certainly.  Fix the deficit problems and avert the fiscal cliff but do not continue to devolve in to partisanship. The next president would do well to remember the words of Lincoln in his Gettysburg Address, "...that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth."  We need to get back to, "Government of the people, by the people, for the people....".   That is the only way to save the nation AGAIN in 2013.
